此件玉蝉通体受沁呈红褐色，皮壳厚重。玉蝉身体修长，双目鼓凸，颈部阴刻两道弦纹，双翅收拢贴背，尾部较尖。背面以粗阴线刻蝉身腹纹。整体仿照汉代“八刀蝉”造型而作，刀法简练，但缺少凌厉感。汉代多以玉蝉作口琀，后世多有仿制，此件即为典型的明代仿汉蝉器物，寓意高洁。头端打一对牛鼻穿孔以系挂。
