André Bouys was born in Hyères in southern France in 1656. He was a pupil of François de Troy in Paris, where he established his reputation as one of the foremost portrait painters of his generation, becoming a member of the French Academy in 1688. Although his principal occupation was as a portraitist, towards the end of his career Bouys specialised in still life pictures of tables laden with luxurious food, drink, and wares, of which the present lot is a fine example.
