View of ‘Oud Eik en Duinen’, The HagueSigned lower leftOil on canvas, 70.3 x 92.3 cmProvenance:- Kunsthandel Simonis & Buunk, Ede- Private collection, the NetherlandsNote:Louis Apol belongs to the most important masters of the Hague School and is best known for his winter landscapes and snow-covered forest views in which he focused on nature instead of people like most of his contemporaries did. Apol came upon his finest landscapes mainly in and around Arnhem and The Hague, such as this view of the ruin of ‘Oud Eik en Duinen’. The rich history of this ruin dates back to 1247, when Willem II of Holland constructed a chapel in honour of his father, Floris IV, Count of Holland. Today, the remains of the chapel rise above the numerous funerary monuments of the cemetery that arose around the ruin over the centuries. Please note: condition reports and additional photos are available upon request.
