A PAIR OF ‘ROMANCE OF THE WESTERN CHAMBER’ PAINTINGS
China, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Ink and gouache on silk. Finely painted with a scene from the Romance of the Western Chamber (Xixiang Ji), which tells the story of a secret love affair between Zhang Sheng, a young scholar, and Cui Yingying, the daughter of a chief minister of the Tang court. Both scenes show her tidying her hair as he observes her. Mounted on paper (browned) and in a vintage wood frame, one behind glass.
Condition: Good condition with some wear, soiling and very minor losses with touch ups.
Provenance: English private collection. According to the vendor acquired from a Swiss collector.
