Novo-Hispanic School; 18th century. "Christ of Ixmiquilpan (Lord of Santa Teresa)". Oil on canvas. Re-drawn. Measurements: 99 x 77 cm. The purity mantle of Jes Crucified, added to the vases that are arranged symmetrically in the lower part of theposition, indicate that the piece is related to the Christ of Ixmiquilpan. This is a devotional image found in the Church of the Discalced Carmelites of Santa Teresa, located in Antigua (Mexico). The history of this Christ dates back to 1545, when Alonso de Villa Seca donated a Christ from Spain to the Church of Zimapán. The deteriorated conditions in which the sculpture was found led the bishop to determine that it should be buried with the first deceased who died. However, the figure could not be buried, as there were no deaths during a period of five years. In addition to this decision, there were also miraculo acts linked to the figure of Christ. Juan Pérez de la Cerna, the bishop, ordered it to be transferred to the adoratory of the archbishop's palace, although it was later taken to the convent of San José of barefoot nuns and finally to the aforementioned church of Santa Teresa la Antigua. The painting recreates the altar of Santa Teresa where the sculpture of Christ is located, which has been immortalised pictorially on numero occasions, as in this work or, for example, in the painting by the painter José de Páez, which is currently in the Los Angeles County Meum of Art. It is worth mentioning that, during Spanish colonial rule, a mainly religio painting was developed, aimed at Christianising the indigeno peoples. Local painters were modelled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of type and iconography. The most frequent models were harquebier angels and triangular virgins; however, in the early years of the 19th century, at the time of independence and political openness in some of the colonies, several artists began to depict a new model of painting with its own identity.Dimensions: 99 x 77 cm.
