此砚洗八方形，正面砚堂内凹，环池，背面为洗，外壁及洗内均以青花留白绘海水龙纹，龙纹威严肃穆。整器绘饰工艺繁杂，青花发色浓淡相宜，层次分明，匀凈明快，悦目清新，设计巧妙，颇有生趣，令人感触工艺之精妙，彰显出文房用具的文雅之风。青花地留白技法系元代初创，后历代均有烧造。其制作流程为：先在素瓷坯上以青花料勾勒出纹饰轮廓，再在除纹饰以外的地方渲染青色，形成青地白花。其制作工艺与白地青花器相同，只是纹饰的表现色彩正好相反——蓝色为地，白色为花。青花留白在制作上需使用青花进行较大面积的涂抹以及渲染，工艺繁杂，青花消耗量大，在纹饰填绘上又颇费工时，因品种和存世数量均少，一向被视为名贵品种。
