A VICTORIAN BRASS TWO-INCH REFRACTING TELESCOPESPENCER BROWNING ANDPANY, MID 19TH CENTURYWith leather covered tapered tube, shuttered eyepiece and single draw signed Spencer. Browning. & Co. London, Improved, now mounted via a fabricated pivoted cradle onto a mahogany tripod stand with the legs joined at the centre with brass collared screw fixings and terminating with spike feet.The telescope 95cm (37.5ins) long closed, 6.5cm (2.5ins) diameter.The partner between William Spencer, Richard Browning and Ebenezer Rt is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as working from several addresses in Wapping, London 1784-1840. All of the founding partners had died by 1819 but the biness continued trading in their name by their successors until bing Spencer Browning andpany in 1840. They were agents for Alexander Adie and are noted for their navigational and surveying instruments.
