Face mask (Agbodogin) Ishan people. Nigeria, West Africa. Early-mid 20th C. Wood and reed sections.Condition: Very good with some old gnaw marks from a rodent along the edges of features and high points. The surface is darkened and encrusted with remains of the fatty oil and white pigment application, overall. This rarely seen mask form shows the classic features of the type: ears placed high and cut-out, pronounced mouth with inset teeth (reed), deep brow with large, slanting eyes, exaggerated, broad nose, stacked coiffure, and emphasized, patterned beard. cf: Sotheby's, African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian Art, sale no.
