Early 20th C. Lobi Janus Form Bateba Figure. Burkina Faso, West Africa. Standing with both arms upraised in a threatening position, this extraordinary example shows a female with second face in a janus position. The facial style is quite like Bateba Yadawara (sad Bateba). Wood with encrusted, darkened patina. In very fine condition with a old, small loss to the bowl like form atop the head; remains of sacrificial surface encrustation.Provenance: Fritz and Lucille Wallace collection, 1990's to 2013; Calm Ocean private collection, FL 2014-present.Height: 9.75 in.
