PROPERTY OF A LADY A pale celadon jade figure of foreigner, small Buddhist lion and kneeling figure17th Century The foreigner bent slightly forward and resting on a short crutch held in his right hand, dressed in rich robes and with a large cape tied at his chest and running over his right shoulder and spreading like a sail around his body to his outstretched left arm upon which sits a superbly detailed Buddhistic lion, a Buddhist attendant kneels before him offering a ribboned ball, the cape cut very thinly in places to silhouette parts of the design. 3 3/4in high (9.5cm) high 十七世紀 青玉胡人 Provenance: Spink & Son Ltd., London A Private English Collector in the US., 1970's to the present day 出處: 倫敦 Spink & Son Ltd. 美國英裔私人收藏,1970 年代至今 For a white jade luohan and Buddhistic lion group dated to the seventeenth century, see Christie's, Hong Kong, 'The Gerald Godfrey Private Collection of Fine Chinese Jades', 30 October 1995, lot 876. The ear-ringed louhan wears a wide cape across his shoulders and holds a brocaded ball in one hand and touches a Buddhistic lion's back with the other. Like our group, it appears to represent the tiger tamer, po-lo-to-she , with the tiger cub now represented as a fully Sinicized fu -lion. Special features of this particular type of luohan appear to relate to the depictions of central Asian figures and tribute bearers, with their 'foreign' appearance and the c-form diadem and parted curly hair.
