After Jacopo Bassano, early 18th Century- The Lamentation; oil on canvas, 84.8 x 121 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Painted after the originalposition by Jacopo Bassano (c.1510-1592), who developed several variations of nocturnal Lamentation or Deposition scenes between the 1570s and 1585. Such scenes incited considerable interest in Venice and contributed significantly to the increased regard for his works. Indeed, the story of Christ's Passion - and specifically the Lamentation - included subjects that particularly lent themselves to nocturnal settings. According to Catholic tradition, although Christ died in the afternoon, the sun waspletely obscured in that moment and the earth went dark. Bassano's best known version of 'The Lamentation' dates to 1580-2 (154 x 225 cm.) and is housed in the Louvre Museum, Paris [no.433]. The emotional intensity of the present example is decidedly enhanced by the pitch-black night, illuminated only by the torch positioned at the centre of theposition. Individual rays of light from the torch hit the muscles of Christâs broken body and cast strong shadows in the folds of the Virginâs mantle, as elements further from the centre recede into darkness. Please refer to department for condition report
