Circle of Gilbert Jackson, English fl.1622-1640- Portrait of Sir John Acland (c.1552-1620), half-length wearing black robes with white lace trim, standing in an interior, turned to the left; oil on canvas, inscribed and dated in a later hand 'Sir John Acland / of Columjohn Kt / 1605' (lower left), 96.2 x 80.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK (by descent). Note: Sir John Acland was the second son of John Acland (d.1553) in the parish of Landkey, Devon and his wife Mary Redcliff, daughter of Hugh Redcliff of Stepney near London. He was married twice, firstly to Elizabeth Rolle, who was the widow of Robert Mallet of Woolleigh in Beaford, Devon, though the couple left no surviving children. During Elizabethâs lifetime, the couple lived at Woolleigh and later John purchased the manor of Columb John in the parish of Broadclyst (probably made possibly by Elizabethâs wealth), where he rebuilt the old manor house and its domestic chapel. The nearby manor of Killerton (National Trust owned since 1944), adjacent to Columb John, was not purchased at this time but later by Acland's eldest nephew Sir Arthur Acland (husband of the sitter in the following lot). In 1583, the sitter, John Acland, was appointed to the county bench as a Justice of the Peace and in 1608-09 was Sheriff of Devon. He was knighted by King James I on 15 March 1604 in the Tower of London, and in 1607 became Member of Parliament for Devon. His charitable gifts were numerous and generous. He was buried in Broadclyst Church, where a sculpted monument to him and his wives survives, dated 1613, andmissioned by himself. It was described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as âone of the most sumptuous Jacobean monuments in Devon and the most splendid of a related groupâ. For further information on the sitter, see /s/dlPECDkY2QS37x8HLMdZB?domain=histparl.ac.uk. He would have been aged around fifty-three in the present portrait, which is a particularly charming and confidently rendered likeness. Please refer to department for condition report
