Note: This painting is a studio copy after the similarly sized prime version by Ribera, conceived in 1630-1635 and owned by the Prado Museum in Madrid [P001088] (pleta, Madrid 2008, p.379, cat.A132). Painted series of the Apostles became very popular during the Counter Reformation and were often conceived, as in the present work, as half-length figures set against a neutral background, holding their iconographical attributes.
