WALLACE AND ALICE SMITH, SAN FRANCISCO, SOLD TO BENEFIT GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND, SAN RAFAEL, THE PANDA FUND A PAIR OF LARGE CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN 'HUNDRED BIRDS' BALUSTER VASESLate Qing dynasty/Republic period Each heavily potted with a tall ovoid body supporting a trumpet neck and scalloped rim, the sides richly painted with a variety of birds soaring, perching, strutting, and engaging with one another in a blossoming garden, all between floral bands enclosing shaped cartouches at the foot and shoulder, the bird and flower scene repeated at the neck, a pair of high-relief chilong applied to each side of the shoulder, and a pair of sculptural 'lion and cub' handles at the neck, the chilong and handles gilt, the base unglazed. 31 1/8in (96.8cm) high (2).
