本器為青銅鋪首，為具有避邪意義的建築飾器。其面作饕餮、通體加錯金銀飾，流光溢彩，相互輝映。其饕餮靈目有神，目尾朝下而眉尾上捲延伸，口銜圓形鳴環掛於其上，鳴環上錯金銀裝飾圖像，捲雲紋與雲雷紋交錯鑲嵌。通器勻稱，錯金銀飾精美，器狀古樸靈動，比例精巧。
鋪首，大多冶獸首銜環之狀。其形制，有冶蠡狀者，有冶獸吻者，有冶贍狀者，蓋取其善守濟。又有冶龜蛇狀及虎形者，用來鎮凶辟邪。最早可追朔至殷商時代。鋪首銜環鑄飾成青銅器的裝飾構件與祭祀使用的的青銅器禮器相同，具有神靈溝通的目的，後期發展出鎮邪之用。
《呂氏春秋．先識》曰：「周鼎著饕餮，有首無身，食人未咽，害及其身，以言報更也。」饕餮兇猛而又積財善守，因此常作為鋪首置於門或棺槨之上避除諸惡，又具有守財的意味，本器即具此趨吉、避禍、守財的美好寓意。
