11th-12th century A.D. A bronze zoomorphic chape for a drinking hornprising a quatrefoil domed plaque with remains of niello inlay above a baluster D-section outer arm developing to a raven-head finial with niello-filled lentoid eyes and a hooked beak; square-section arm to the reverse extending to a lentoid-section narrow hoop joining the lateral arms of the quatrefoil. 9.83 grams, 40 mm (1 5/8 in."). Found Romney Marsh area, Kent, UK. Property of a Kent gentleman. The imagery of the raven-head suggests a Late Saxon or Anglo-Scandinavian origin for the piece. Stylistically it shares some features with 11th century Hiberno-Norse metalwork.Condition Report: Fine condition. Rare.
