14th century A.D. A large broad arrowhead with swallow-tailed incurving crescentic barbs. Cf. a similar example in the Azincourt Museum, variously dated between 12th-15th century A.D.; another more precisely dated specimen (14th century A.D.) can be seen in the Byzantine Museum of Thessaloniki, from the castle of Rentinas; see also Wadge, R., 'Medieval Arrowheads from Oxfordshire' in Oxoniensia, 2008, pp.2-16, pls.3-4, dated 13th-14th centuries (types H3 and H4). 245 grams, 17 cm (6 3/4 in.) Private collection, York, UK, 1990s. Property of a Sussex, UK, teacher. Such typology of barbed arrowheads were in use since the 9th century in Europe, both in East and West. All fell into mainly of two types: arrowheads with large heads and long broad barbs, flattened diamond section; or larger types, with long barbs, between which the socket extends to form pronounced spine to head.
