ENRIQUE MARTY (Salamanca, 1969)."Loca", 2005.Polyurethane, oil, canvas and hair.Another sculpture from the same series is reproduced on the artist's website: "High Girl", 2003.Provenance: Important Spanish Collection.Size: 115 x 56 x 56 cm.Madness is one of the themes that Enrique Marty has treated with the boldness that characterises him, transgressing prejudices and moral veils. He did so with the figure of Nietzsche, for example, whose insane phase he chose to focus on. As he has also made other philosophers somewhat insane, for as Goya taught us, reason produces monsters. The "Madwoman" is a sculpture that we can define as expressionist and disturbing realism, although not without humour. Enrique Marty's black humour guides the sociological reflection. The familiar leads to the sinister, the excess of reasoning leads to unreason.Enrique Marty is one of the most internationally renowned visual artists of his generation. He has exhibited in the most important museums and galleries in Europe, Latin America and Asia, and his work forms part of many international collections. Enrique Marty graduated in Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca in 1992 and received a grant from the Marcelino Botín Foundation in 1996-1997. The Madrid gallery La Gran, which represents the artist, includes the following reflection on his work: "Enrique Marty's work, often controversial for the power and freshness of its expression or for the subjects treated, mixes different media to compose striking scenographies. In them he explores the sinister, those situations in which the familiar is disturbingly strange. His protagonists, almost always taken from their immediate surroundings, have abandoned the vain surface of the cliché to enter into cursed, violent and grotesque situations. Through his work, Enrique Marty shakes us up and makes us uncomfortable by confronting us with characters and scenes that have lost their reassuring everyday aspect to move into the theatrical terrain of the grotesque and satire. Absurdity, tension and hidden anguish emerge in his work, destabilising conventional reality.Solo exhibitions (selection): "Mutatis Mutandis". Keteleer Gallery. Platform 6A. Otegem, Belgium. 2021.
