A FRENCH EMPIRE CARPET POSSIBLY AUBUSSON, EARLY 19TH CENTURY The chestnut field around central circular rosette with reddish purple tulips, floral bouquet spandrels, with repeating stiff leaf and flowerhead green field main borderapproximately 249 x 214cmProvenance: Property from the estate of the late Joe Constantine. For an example of similar central floral design please see Christie's, New York, 13/14th December 2007, Lot 1113 ($2,000), catalogued as a AN EMPIRE AUBUSSON FRAGMENT, FRANCE, CIRCA 1815. Another carpet, with richer main field design and all over decoration was sold at Christie's, Paris, 17th June 2000, Lot 390 (FRF 141,000).This has been in storage for some time and is crumpled, rumpled and creased. The overall flat woven surface with wear from foot fall and use revealing white structural threads. The whole showing signs of restoration including areas of patching, re-weaving, remedial work to tighten up underlying structure. The ends have been folded over, the sides slightly frayed. Colours are muted, partially from variable exposure to sunlight, but still retaining some brightness to the shades of blue and the parrot tulips. The surface looks to be fairly dirty and some old signs of water spotting. The reverse is backed making examination impossible. Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition.
