A SET OF SIX GEORGE IV MAHOGANY DINING CHAIRSATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, EARLY 19TH CENTURYThe morocco leather backs and seats buttoned, the seat rails of two chairs stamped 'T. WILLSON 68 GREAT QUEEN STREET LONDON', the later brass cappings of the casters stamped 'CLARKE & TIMMINS' each 90cm high, 48cm wide, 61cm deepFor a related chair see Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, vol. This design of this lot of chairs relates to a set of 'Handsome Mahogany Chairs' made for Lord Bolton of Hackwood Park in 1813 by George and Richard Gillow of Oxford Street. In the Christie's 1998 Hackwood catalogue introduction, Anthony Coleridge emphasised the advanced style of the Gillow chairs supplied in 1813 (plate 200) and pointed out the interlaced scrolls in the crestings, the dished top rails and reeded turned tapering legs... are all features expected on chairs of the 1820s and 1830s, but not as early as 1813.The well-regarded furniture retailer, broker and appraiser Thomas Willson is first recorded in directories at 68 Great Queen Street, London in 1821. After his death in 1829 the firm was continued by his wife Mary and son Matthew until it ceased in 1854.Clarke & Timmins, cabinet and brass founders, fl. 1877-86, are recorded at 10 Soho Square, London and works, 28 Exeter Row, BirminghamThere are some marks, scratches, chips, splits, abrasions consistent with age and use, some to the extremities and edges. There is a slightly opaque quality to some areas of the 'varnish' of the wood including the areas that have knocks. There is evidence of worm including to the seat rails. The brass cappings and brown ceramic casters are late 19th century. There is some later staining to some seat rails, with some later corner blocks. The upholstery has various later woven fabric border trim applied with some traces of glue. The leather is aged and dry with creases, rips, scuffs and wear. Please note we have not inspected the frame beneath the upholstery and can't comment on the condition and originality of this area. Please refer to the additional images for a visual reference of condition.
