A RARE PAIR OF EARLY HENRY VIII CARVED OAK PANELS CIRCA 1510-1530 Each with crown surmounting enjoined Tudor Rose and Pomegranate of Granada emblematic of the marriage of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon, within fleur-de-lys and above carved shield with ostrich and three 'Romayne' style carved portrait profile roundels, depicting nobility and possibly a Turkish gentlemaneach approximately 129cm high, 26.5cm wideAlthough this stylistic heraldic device seems to be rare in furniture of the period the Museum of London holds in its collection a small pewter badge that shows a very similar stylistic device of the conjoined Tudor Rose and the pomegranate. The suggestion is made that the device may be related to either the marriage of Katherine- or to the earlier marriage in 1501 to Henry's older brother Arthur. Additionally Petrus Alamire's Book of 28 motets (now in The Royal Collection) - a book of music compositions- is copiously illustrated and, again, reuses this particular stylistic device of the conjoined emblems.See also; Stephen Hawes, 'A Joyfull Medytacvon to All Englande'(1509), printed Wynkyn de Worde, 4to, n.d. (Cambridge University Library), a single sheet with woodcut of the coronation of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon displaying the figures beneath their respective heraldic motifs. The 'Romayne' style was the name given to the new classical style of English sculpture at the time of Henry VIII influenced by the Italian Renaissance. For a discussion on similar panels see Victor Chinnery 'Oak Furniture, the British Tradition', Woodbridge, 1979, pp. 425-427.
