本品甪端头部塑造极为特殊，双耳俏立，独角粗韧，双目圆睁，眉毛宽厚，鼻头饱满，张口吐舌，颚下须髯细密，面容写实拟人，有古代图腾特色。四足据地有力，体态健硕，气宇不凡。
中国古代经常取各种瑞兽形象制成香熏。甪端，为中国古代传说中的神异之兽，头生一角是其最大特征。沈约在《宋书．符瑞志》曰：“甪端日行万八千里，又晓四夷之语，圣主在位明达方外幽远，则奉书而至。耶律楚材谓为旌星之精灵，异如鬼神。”
