A NEAR-PAIR OF BLUE AND WHITE 'LOTUS BOY' DISHES, KANGXI PERIODChina, 1662-1722. Each with shallow sides rising from a flat foot to an everted rim, painted to the interior with a boy wearing only a floral-patterned cloth wrapped around the lower body in the center, holding large lotus stems rising to full bloom to the sides and standing on two lotus leaves, surrounded by scrolling vines, all against a blue ice-crack ground. (2)Provenance: Holzapfel collection, Geneva, Switzerland. The greater part of the Holzapfel Oriental Ceramics collection was formed in England and Ireland in the late 1950s and 1960s. After the death of Mr. Holzapfel, most of his pieces went to his children, ten in all. Two of Mr. Holzapfel's eldest sons then started their own collections in the early 1970s, both by adding significantly to their shares of the inheritance. Collecting was eventually continued by one of Mr. Holzapfel's grandsons, who lives in Switzerland and is a member of the Oriental Ceramic Society. This lot was acquired by second generation members of the Holzapfel family circa between 1970 and 2005 and has remained in the family ever since.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and firing flaws, such as pitting and glaze irregularities, some surface scratches to exterior.Weight: 160.4 g and 171.9 gDimensions: Diameter 14 cm (each)One bowl with an apocryphal six-character markda Ming Chenghua nianzhi to the recessed base.Literature comparison: A similar dish, from the collection of P.J.
