A MOLDED ‘CÁO GUÓ JIÙ - 曹國舅’ PORCELAIN BOTTLE CHINA, EARLY 20TH CENTURY The Daoist immortal is depicted standing on a celestial cloud dome-shaped base. He wears a long robe which is adorned in underglaze cobalt with dragons flying amidst crashing waves and clouds. He is identified by the pair of jade castanets that he holds in his left hand. His face is finely detailed and is enameled in light pink to render the carnation of the skin. His head is a removable one and opens the bottle. H: 28,3 cm Note: Cao Guojiu (曹国舅) is one of the Eight Daoist Immortals and carries a ruyi scepter or castanets which are two long ‘clappers’ thought to symbolize the ceremonial tables required for admission to the imperial court.
