A FAMILLE ROSE PALETTE ‘EIGHT BUDDHISTIC LIONS’ PORCELAIN DISH APOCRYPHAL MARK OF EMPEROR QIANLONG CHINA, LATE QING DYNASTY, LATE 19TH CENTURY It rests on a short ring foot and has a circular shape with a foliate rim imitating a lotus flower. The slightly recessed central part is finely painted with eight Buddhistic or Fu lions playing with ribbons. The base bears a red and stamped apocryphal mark of Emperor Qianlong, a six-character one in seal / zhuanshu script. It also bears an old antique dealer label: ‘Woosen [...] Charcas’. Note: The lion is considered to be a brave and intelligent animal and thus symbolizes power and majesty. The Chinese word for lion (shi - 狮) has the same pronunciation and can be a visual pun or rebus for ‘teacher’, (shi - 师).
