张之洞，字孝达，号香涛。祖籍直隶南皮，出生于贵州兴义府（今安龙县）。同治二年（1863）探花，授翰林院编修。历任侍读，侍讲，内阁学士，山西巡抚，两广总督，湖广总督，两江总督，军机大臣等职，官至体仁阁大学士。与曾国藩、李鸿章、左宗棠并称“晚清中兴四大名臣”。
