Tom Gentleman (British 1882-1966) The Grey Horses, lithograph, The Baynard Press, measurements 49.5 x 76.5 cm (SH) The Grey Horses was a lithograph published at the end of World War Two as part of a scheme where artists were commissioned by a committee headed by Herbert Read to provide schools with work by good artists at low cost. The scheme was intended to encourage a feeling of optimisim following the conclusion of the war. The young boy admiring the horses in the foreground is believed to be the artist's son David. The lithograph is a work on paper, unframed. The sheet is in good condition with no major evidence for losses and damage, the surface appears stable. There is a small tear to the edge near the top right corner, some spots of foxing to the margins and a couple of isolated faint spots on the white horse (please refer to additional photographs added to the catalogue). The colours are well preserved and appear stable. There is some general ageing (yellowing) of the paper.
