Giuseppe Porta, better known as Giuseppe Salviati, il Salviati or il Salviatino (Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, 1520-Venice, 1575) was an Italian Mannerist painter. He was a disciple of Francesco Salviati during his stay in Rome, from whom he adopted the surname. He followed him to Venice in 1539, where he formed a workshop in which he adapted the Roman Mannerist style to Venetian taste, with progressive influence from Titian and Paolo Veronese. He made various fresco decorations in Venetian villas and palaces, most of which are lost today. In 1565 he returned to Rome, where he participated in the decoration of the Scala Regia of the Vatican Apostolic Palace. Bibliography: Garzanti Encyclopedia of Art, p. 864.
