Historical Heritage Photo Library Inventory VN-38249 - Registered by Blanca Pons Sorolla for the painter s catalog raisonné (BPS 2702) This beautiful work, painted in an intimate key, shows us the painter s youngest daughter, Elena Sorolla, in the courtyard of the family home. She wears a white coat and her face is sketched, being perfectly recognizable, along with other elements that allow the scene to be placed in one of the rooms of the painter s house. In this space you can see the garden, the portal, the fence, the stairs, the ceramic plinth and some old Valencian tiles, belonging to the Sorolla collection, hanging on the wall. Joaquín Sorolla had a special predilection for his garden, as haven of family peace, and also as a space dedicated to reflection and study. He was inspired for its creation in the Spanish historical gardens and painted it on different occasions. One example is the Garden of Casa Sorolla, painted in 1920, which is kept by the Sorolla Museum in Madrid, with which this work has many stylistic parallels. As in the rest of Sorolla s production, the true protagonist of this work is the light. It is a light that banishes the human presence or leaves it completely blurred, as in this case, the artist delighting with his brushstroke in the recreation of the chromatic mosaics that make up the vegetation of the gardens or in the dissolution of the architectural elements. The painting is part of a group of late works of his production, painted in the spring of 1920, shortly before the artist suffered the cerebral hemorrhage that would end his career. With reference to Blanca Pons Sorolla for the painter s catalog raisonné, with number BPS 2702.
