The standard figure depicts the Mother of God with the Child in her arms, usually in the left, while her right hand points to her, showing her to the viewer. The Virgin's head is bent towards her child. The name Virgin Odighitria extends to all icons in which the Virgin extends her right hand in her gesture of "pointing the way".
