32 x 23 (x2).
Italian school; 17th century."Popular types".Oil on panel. It presents faults and restorations.Measurements: 32 x 23 (x2).Pair of portraits that in both cases represent the bust of a male figure with the body turned slightly in three quarters. In the two pieces the characters adopt a similar gesture, although the age of the men varies between them, one being younger than the other. They both laugh in such a way that they present themselves to the viewer in an amiable manner, which in a way borders on satire. This can also be deduced from the type of clothing worn by each of them. This composition and the subject matter are based on scenes from the popular reality of the Baroque period, which were also common in the picaresque literature of the time, bringing this group of paintings closer to the naturalist trend. It is a genre in which popular types and attitudes, behaviour, values and habits common to a specific group of the population, region or class are described by means of a satirical, nostalgic or narrative description of the environments, customs, dress, festivals and entertainments, traditions, trades and representative types of a society. The idea of costumbrismo arose from an attempt to understand reality, or more precisely, reality understood in a particular way, from a specific point of view.
