The young woman holds a large ember in one hand, while with the other she holds a candle, which has not yet been lit. This action directly illuminates the young woman's face, while the rest of the painting is in complete darkness.Scenes of this type that played with light were very common during the Baroque period, when lighting effects took on a new meaning by modelling the forms and playing with space through resources such as chiaroscuro. However, this type of image is not exclusive to that period, as the effect of light and shadow in the configuration of the image has always fascinated artists, in fact the Museo del Prado collection houses "The Fable" by El Greco, where the same lighting effect can be seen.
