Northern European School, 18th century."Saint Dorothea".Etching on vellum with hand-illuminated border. It presents humidity stains originated by the passage of time.Measurements: 19,5 x 15,7 cm.The basket of fruits that the young woman carries identifies her as Saint Dorothea. Legend has it that, on her way to martyrdom, Saint Dorothea met Theophilus, who ironically said to her: "Wife of Christ, send me apples and roses from your husband's garden". Dorothea agreed, and before her beheading, while she was praying, a child appeared and brought her three roses and three apples, even though it was the middle of winter. Born in Caesarea in Cappadocia, Saint Dorothea honoured God with fasting and prayer. Of Christian faith, when the prefect Sapricius asked her to offer a sacrifice to the gods, she refused and was tortured.
