Lei vases were commonly used as a large wine container or ceremonial vessel from the late Shang dynasty to the middle of the Spring and Autumn Period. During the Song and Ming dynasties, imitation antique wares became a fashionable genre of interior decorative arts. Academic literature describes instances of old-style bronze wares used for flower arrangements and incense burning.
This lei vase has a strong shape and a simple design, covered in rich patina, with two beast-head-shaped handles on the upper sides of the body, and one on the lower side. Between the upper two handles are six swirl reliefs.
