13th-16th century A.D. An iron axehead with expanding blade, elliptical socket and flat square rear, the blade decorated with eight notches. Private collection, London, UK. Property of a Sussex, UK, teacher. The axe belongs to the type IX of the Glosek classification. This was by far one of the most popular form of axe which remained unchangeable and continued to be in use until modern times, especially in Eastern Europe, where it appears as early as the mid 13th century A.D.
