Fell 12 October 2006 A.D. A H5 stone meteorite with fusion crust, found in Hodh ech Chargui, Mauritania at 0400 hours; held on membrane in an acrylic collector's box. 69 grams, 42 mm (154 grams total, 10 x 10 cm including box) (1 5/8 in. (4 x 4 in.)). Ex European meteorite market 2007. Property of a Leicestershire, UK, collector. Apanied by a dated dealer's card and in a Swiss membrane display box with aluminium specimen tag. Bassikounou meteorites fell after a fireball was witnessed on October 16, 2006 over Mauritania. A 3165 gram stone was found the following morning. Hundreds of stones large and small have been found since. Bassikounou is a type H5 chondrite. The meteorite has abundant nickel-iron metal and rare copper which is found in both the metal and troilite. Some shock veins are found in Bassikounou stones. A beautiful black fusion crust is on most of the specimens. Windows have been polished into some which were broken, other specimens areplete or nearlyplete. [No Reserve]
