Y A BECHSTEIN ROSEWOOD AND ORMOLU MOUNTED GRAND PIANO CIRCA 1897 A 6ft 7in Model V grand piano of Louis XV design, in a rosewood case with ormolu foliate cast mounts, on three open dual cabriole shaped trestle supports united by shaped flat triform stretchers, with lyre form pedal upright and shaped fretwork music desk Serial number 46644, 7 ½ octaves, case stamped 14510 to underside 202cm long, 150cm wide Provenance: William Stephen Ian Whitelaw ('Willie Whitelaw') 1st Viscount Whitelaw, KT, CH, MC, PC, DLSwinton Park, North Yorkshire Often known as Willie Whitelaw, William Whitelaw was a British Conservative Party politician who served in a wide number of Cabinet positions, most notably as Home Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister.The Cunliffe-Lister family (who later took the Swinton title), bought Swinton Park, a blackened stone stately home on the outskirts of Masham in the early 1880s. At the time, the estate had been shortlisted by Queen Victoria as a possible country residence, but she chose Sandringham in Norfolk instead, where the shooting was said to be a little less challenging. There is a strong political history at Swinton Park visitors and include Churchill and Chamberlain.
