Originally titled LA DOULEUR D'ORPHÉE (Orpheus' Sorrow)- the work depicts the figure with ;yre and three headed Cerberus at his feet- in the act of turning to look at his love Eurydice- and, in the process, losing her forever. The plaster model for this work was first exhibited at the Salon of 1887.
