Property of various owners A RYŪKYŪ LACQUER TRAYRyūkyū Islands Edo period (1615-1868), 17th/18th century Of oblong shape with shallow rounded edges on top of three half-walnut-form feet, with mitsuda-e decoration on the obverse, within the recessed interior a design of a tachibana citrus tree growing from behind a brushwood fence, red, white, and green clouds above and below the tree and fence, all of which are within an eight-sided border of inlay luminescent shell with red trefoils at each interior line junction, the area outside the inlay within the recession of diaper ground, and surrounded with green and red foliate scrolls on the interior of the rim, the reverse lacquered in black, with the Chinese character for the number one inscribed in red 1 3/4in (3.2cm) high x 14in (35.6cm) diameter at widest Provenance Previously sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong May 26, 2014, lot 929.
