Property of various owners ANONYMOUS (19TH CENTURY)An Underdrawing of a Mountain Spirit and Tiger Joseon dynasty (1392-1897), 19th century The study painted in ink on paper with the deity seated by a knotty pine tree with his tigerpanion, framed and glazed 29 3/8 x 19 1/2in (74.6 x 49.5cm) Underdrawings, glued to the reverse of the silk and providing artists with a guide as they applied layers of pigment, were frequently used in the production of Korean paintings. In the present lot, traces of color from the painted silk surface have bled through onto the paper. Due to the inherently destructive nature of this process few underdrawings have survived intact but for another example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, see metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/76764
