A PAINTED POTTERY FIGURE OF A CAPARISONED HORSE, EASTERN WEI DYNASTY
China, 534-550. Standing foursquare on a rectangular base with long arched neck and elongated head, richly caparisoned with a saddle, large tassels on the chest strap and domed bosses on the crupper straps suspending four further tassels on each side.
Provenance: Dutch trade.
Condition: Very good condition overall, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, firing flaws, minor losses and associated old repairs, small chips, few structural cracks, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, drilled holes from sample-taking, all exactly as expected from Wei dynasty excavations.
Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 30 May 2022, based on sample number C122f2, sets the firing date of one sample at between 1000 and 1600 years ago. A copy of the report, issued by Oxford Authentication, accompanies this lot.
