A SCARLET-RED SILK GAUZE INFORMAL SUMMER ROBE, LATE QING DYNASTY China, circa 1900. Finely embroidered in Beijing knot and satin stitch with sprays of peaches, grapes, Buddha's hand citron, peonies, and stylized bats, the hem with shou medallions, bats, endless knots, and foliage above a black ground. The interior with green silk. The sleeves decorated with precious objects and peonies issuing from vases interspersed with the eight Buddhist treasures.

Provenance: From the private collection of Tilla Durieux. Tilla Durieux (1880-1971), born Ottilie Godefroy, was an Austrian actress. After studying piano and acting in Vienna, she went to Berlin where she achieved her acting breakthrough in 1903. Durieux was an enthusiastic collector. During her marriage with Paul Cassirer, a highly influential art dealer and critic, she developed a true passion for art. The couple's collection included many masterpieces, including several noted works by Vincent Van Gogh.
Condition: Good condition overall with some wear, minor tears, loose thread and open seams, fading and minimal soiling.
