Desk clock; Louis Philippe, ca.1840. Gilt bronze. With later period areas. Measurements: 42 x 5 x 34 x 12 cm. Table clock from the Charles X period, made in gilt bronze and conceived as a free-standing sculpture standing on an elaborate stepped pedestal. The base is plain and prismatic, with smooth edges that reveal the Empire heritage, with S-shaped turned feet with chiselled details and a central fan-shaped palmette that comes from the ornamental background of the neoclassical period, a common feature at this time. The intermediate step, more of an ornamental moulding than an independent area, is covered with a moulding of interlaced ribbons, again a very typical neoclassical motif. Above it is the upper level, again prismatic, with clean geometric forms. To finish off, there is a sculpture of a man in military dress, with his jacket open and wielding a sword, while with the other he rests on the Roman-numbered clock case. The posture of the protagonist lends great movement and expressiveness to the piece, as it seems that he is a figure almost fallen in battle.
