Pectoral clock in the form of a Latin cross. Twentieth-century work following seventeenth-century German models (ca. 1670). Silver. In need of repair. This piece belongs to the personal collection of Don Juan José Ontalva (Chinchón, 1930- Madrid, 2019), a famous watchmaker from Madrid, descendant of several family generations dedicated to the world of watches. During his career he achieved a high degree of precision and skill, becoming the master of other watchmakers. He is currently recognised for numerous works, including the commissioning and restoration of the Billeter astronomical clock, located in the Congress of Deputies. Measurements: 7 x 5.5 x 2.5 cm. This clock in the shape of a Latin cross is a continuation of 17th-century German models. It has a hinged lid delicately worked with openwork depicting scrolls and motifs of Baroque aesthetics. At its centre is a carved image of Calvary with Christ, the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist. Below this scene is the face of a winged cherub, also carved. This hinged lid conceals the clock case, which houses the dial itself (with Roman numerals and hands) and the engraved decoration of Paradise with Adam and Eve. The openwork of the hinged lid is continued on the sides of the case. The back, also with a hinged lid, conceals the watch mechanism.
