Pair of Malagueño barros, mid-19th century. "Dancers with castanets". Pair of polychrome terracotta figures. Wooden base and glazed urn. Damage in one of them (detached from the base) and breakage in a glass urn. Measurements: 33 cm. high (larger figure); 41 x 23 x 27 cm. (the larger one, with urn). Pair of statuettes in polychrome terracotta, representing regional dancers captured in full dance movement. They have been worked in the round, with great attention to detail, both in the precise modelling and in the attentive polychromy, which reproduces the costumes and movements with verism and reliable study. The `barros malagueños` are baked and polychrome clay sculptures, baked in the oven, which reproduce popular types and scenes of customs typical of the city of Málaga. They were the most popular handicraft from the end of the 18th century onwards. They included depictions of local or national folklore festivals, popular characters, professions, dancers, etc., standing out for the descriptive precision of the clothing and the quality of the figures. They are the best representation of artistic Romanticism in the city. The antecedents of this type of work are to be found in Naples, in the 18th century and the figures for nativity scenes.
