Fred Uhlman, German/British 1901篓1985 - Welsh Landscape no.1; ink on paper, 24.6 x 34.6 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Piccadilly Gallery, London (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame); The Hon. (?) Makins, purchased from the above on 8th September 1967; private collection Note: Uhlman's depictions of the Welsh landscape are amongst the most important and celebrated of the artists career. Uhlman first visited Northern Wales in the 1940s as a refuge from the ongoing. He and his family would return repeatedly, eventually acquiring a holiday home in Croesor Valley. Like his fellow emigre Josef Herman, Wales was to have a major impact on his art and his reputation in Britain, and Uhlman embraced the isolation of the landscape, creating mystical images, such as the present work. Uhlman's Welsh works were first shown in 1942 at the Leicester Galleries, London. This created a link in his work with the burgeoning Neo-Romantic artists in London, such as Graham Sutherland and John Minton, as well as with his fellow-German, the 19th-century Romantic master, Caspar David Friedrich.
