Frances Richards, British 1903-1985 - The Widow, 1940; watercolour, ink and chalk on paper, signed with initials lower right 'FR', 33 x 33.7 cm Provenance: the Estate of the Artist Note: Frances Richards poignant works forms part of a great lineage in British art exploring femininity, that runs from Gwen John to Tracey Emin. Creating a totally unique vision that moves between folklore and realism, beauty and sadness, Richards examines the mother child relationship, utilising a soft palette and simplified, fluid use of line. Richards married fellow artist Ceri Richards in 1929, and the pair were important figures in interwar artistic circles that included John and Myfanwy Piper, with Richards teaching at the Camberwell School of Art. Richards had exhibitions during her lifetime at major British galleries including Leicester Galleries, Hanover Gallery and the Redfern. Recent exhibitions have included 鈥毭劽垛垰脩鈭氣墹Frances Richards: An Artist Apart鈥毭劽垛垰脩鈭毬?at Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea in 2019.
