He joined the Royal Aircraft establishment in 1927; he was Director of Scientific Research, Ministry of Aircraft Production in 1943; and Chief Scientist to Ministry of Supply 1949-1953. He collected oriental art and published extensively, producing key reference works on blue and white ware, lacquer ware and cloisonné enamels. He and Lady Garner donated much of the collection to the British and Victoria and Albert Museums. He was Honorary Secretary of the Oriental Ceramic Society 1951-1967 and President 1967-1971. pare with a similar waterpot, late 17th to early 18th century, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc.no.79.2.311).
