Ink and color on silk, mounted as a scroll painting in a silk brocade frame with wooden handle. China, 17th century or earlier
Song-style depiction of a large blossoming group of peony flowers in red, white and purple. Above the flowers a flying bird with brown feathers. A corresponding bird on a rock underneath the flowers. Inscribed in the painting at the upper right side in Chinese ‘Gengzi [illegible] yue Baiyun waishi Nantian sanren’ (= made in the [?] month of the year Gengzi) and signed with 2 illegible artist seals. ‘Baiyun Waishi’ and ‘Nantian’ could be artist names. YUN SHOUPING (1633-1690) for example used these names among others. On the outside of the scroll inscribed ‘5351 SUNG TIME TERAS FLOWERS AND BIRD’ and an old Japanese collector’s label
