17th century Andalusian school. "The betrothal of Mary and Joseph" and "Flight into Egypt". Oil on canvas. Retouching. Repainting and restorations. Measurements: 62 x 83 cm; 79 x 99 cm (frame). Two biblical episodes, the Betrothal of the Virgin and the Flight into Egypt, are represented following contemporary Andalusian models, from the Baroque period. In the theme of the wedding of Mary and Joseph, the Italian heritage can be seen in the chequering and compositional balance. The spouses are facing each other, holding hands, slightly turned towards the viewer and surrounded by witnesses, in front of the priest standing behind them, with the Holy Spirit above them. The figures, with their soft features and rounded ovals, reveal the influence of Murillo. The characterisation of the archangel and the Virgin on the donkey on her flight to Egypt also clearly shows an affinity with the Sevillian workshops of the Baroque period. The faint halos that deify the figures are the only supernatural elements in the scene. On the other hand, priority is given to a familiar image, charged with tenderness. The faces are softly modelled by means of an excellent light treatment, which also resolves the landscape with naturalness. The graceful foreshortening of the cherubs also stands out.
